    Bolts

In binding and finishing, the untrimmed, usually folded edges of a signature prior to trimming, not including the binding edge. The fold at the top of a signature is known as the head bolt. Uncut signature folds are called closed bolts. Roughly trimmed edges are called open bolts. Both open and closed bolts require complete trimming at the end of the binding process.
