    Carriage Return

In typewriting or word processing, a manual operation or a code which signifies the end of a line, resulting in new text being added at the beginning of the following line. On a typewriter this was an actual movement of the carriage. In word processing, a carriage return can either be a hard return or a soft return. In ASCII, a carriage return is a control character (specifically, ASCII 13) that instructs the cursor or print head to move to the next line. A carriage return is sometimes referred to as a carrier return.
