    Control Character

A character in a character set (such as in ASCII) that represents a command or function (such as carriage return, line feed, etc.) or formatting attribute, rather than a printing character such as a letter or number. In the ASCII character set, the first thirty-two characters are control characters. In networking and telecommunications, a communication control character facilitates data communication over networks.
