    De Facto Standard

Any computer language, program, routine, device, etc., that through a combination of wide use and little competition has become the model upon which other languages, programs, routines, devices, etc., are based. De facto standards differ from standards consciously developed by organizations in that they tend to be accidental, unintentional, and serendipitous.
