    Derivative Work

Any creative endeavor overtly produced in part or in toto from an already-existing work. The term can be merely descriptive (such as a CD-ROM version of a book) or derogatory (such as a work touted as original but which is an attempt to duplicate another, usually successful, piece of work). In this latter sense, it differs from plagiarism or copyright infringement in that there is just enough original material to sufficiently distinguish it.
