    Discretionary Hyphen

In typography and typesetting, an instruction given to the computer or typesetting device (or "embedded" in a text file) to indicate a point where the program may hyphenate a word if the program needs to. A discretionary hyphen will take precedence over any other type of hyphenation, such a logic program or dictionary. (See Hyphenation.)
