    Dongle

A piece of computer hardware that needs to be attached to a computer system (such as through the parallel port or between the keyboard and the ADB port) in order for some software applications to function. Designed as a way of thwarting unauthorized software duplication, the software scans for a serial number embedded on the hardware device and will not operate if it does not detect it. Also called a hardware key.
