    Feathering Test

A test performed to measure a paper surface's degree of water resistance, or how effectively the paper has been sized. (See Sizing.) In the feathering test, lines are drawn on a paper sample with a pen and a water-based ink. The extent of feathering, or spreading of the lines as ink is absorbed into paper, indicates the efficacy of the paper's sizing for pen-and-ink uses.
