    Fingerprinting

The testing of a printing press prior to beginning the actual print run as a means of determining the exact degree of dot gain, ink density, trapping, and other printing characteristics. Each print job has its own particular "fingerprint," or set of subtle (or not so subtle) variations in the above-mentioned qualities. This fingerprint needs to be determined to properly customize the color separations and ensure proper register of successive color images.
