    Hyphenation Zone

In typography, a "zone" established by a typesetting device or software toward the end of a line within which the system can hyphenate words. A hyphenation zone is commonly used in ragged right copy (justified copy has its own set of problems). The setting of a hyphenation zone is a way of controlling the number of hyphens that will appear in the set copy. Also known as a hot zone.
