A portion of a book appearing immediately prior to the main text and serving to provide an overview of the text before it actually begins. An introduction is commonly distinguished from a foreword (which is commonly written by someone other than the author), and a preface (which tends to be a shorter statement about the text rather than an introduction to it). See Book Typography.
