    Linearization

The process of optimizing an imaging system as a means of controlling all the optical and physical variables involved in the generation of an image, be it it electronic (via scanning) or photographic. Linearization involves the proper setting of such disparate elements as film type and speed, exposure time, the type and intensity of the light source, the focus, and the electrical factors involved, such as amperage and voltage. The goal of linearization is to generate an image—on film or in digital form—with predictable and consistent results.
