    Linotype

    An early typecasting machine, invented in the late 1800s by Ottmar Mergenthaler. The Linotype was the first device that enabled an operator to set type by typing on a keyboard, which automatically cast hot-metal type one line at a time. See Type and Typography: History of Type.
