    Logotype

In typography, a symbol representing a company or product. Originally, in metal typesetting, logotypes were letter combinations or words cast together as one body (for letters or words used frequently) to speed up the typesetting process. ('Logos is the Greek word for "word.") Today, a logotype (referred to popularly as a "logo") is usually a specifically designed company name (often with a symbol). A logo is a design that emphasizes typography, in contrast to a symbol, which is usually an abstract, nontypographic image. Logotypes and symbols are usually included in special pi fonts.
