In many computer programs, a selection tool that identifies the selection object (or portion of an object) by means of an animated dashed line bounding the selection. The term marquee is derived from the animated effect, which looks like a theater marquee. A perhaps more descriptive colloquial term for the marquee tool is marching ants.
