    Pointillism

In digital mage manipulation, a special effect which transforms a continuous tone image into small dots. Essentially, dots of pure colors are placed adjacent to each other, the viewer perceiving that various intermediate shades are present. (This is somewhat different than halftone production.) The term derives from (and is meant to simulate) a style of painting popularized by several Impresisonists of the late nineteenth centiuy, (most notably Georges Seurat), also called pointillism.
