    Soft Dot

In halftone photography, a halftone dot possessing a soft halo or fringe surrounding a solid core, commonly caused by the use of a contact screen. When a plate is made from negatives or positives containing soft dots, the fringe will allow the passage of light resulting in an improperly sized halftone dot on the plate. See also Hard Dot.
