Printing speed is measured in characters per second (cps) and varies according to whether printing is in draft or near-letter-quality mode.

The higher-quality mode usually prints at 25 percent to 30 percent of the machine's draft-mode speed.

For example, a dot-matrix printer that prints drafts at 160 cps will usually slow down to 30 or 40 cps for higher-quality output.
