    Sulfurous Acid

An acid (chemical formula H2SO3) produced in the sulfite process of chemical pulping by burning sulfur to produce sulfur dioxide, then reacting the sulfur dioxide with water. Sulfurous acid is reacted with limestone to produce calcium bisulfite, and the mixture of calcium bisulfite and sulfurous acid dissolves lignin present in wood. (See also Chemical Pulping and Sulfite Process.)
