    Surge Protector

A device attached to the AC cord of an electronic or electric component that absorbs surges in voltage. Such electrical surges may be caused by lightning, nearby electric motors, etc. Although early personal computers could be easily damaged by electrical surges, most contemporary microcomputers have effective surge protection built in. A surge protector never hurts, however.
