    Tensile Test

A means of testing a paper's tensile strength that clamps a strip of paper vertically between two jaws and stretches the paper until it breaks. Tensile strength is expressed in pounds per inch-width strip of paper, or in kilonewtons per meter. The test is performed in the paper's grain direction and cross-grain direction, and is also used when the paper is wet to measure the wet-tensile breaking strength. See Tensile Breaking Strength.
