    Third-Generation Typesetter

A typesetter that forms the character image by means of a photographic or digital record of the character's shape, rather than using a physical character master. The character image is formed on the face of a cathode ray tube, and transferred to photosensitive material by means of fiber optics or a lens.

Machine that sets type electronically by regenerating digitally stored character images.
