    Time Code

In video production, a system whereby an electronic "marker" is encoded (or struped) into every frame of a video signal, usually on a spare channel dedicated to it. The time code typically encodes each frame with the hour, minute, second, and frame corresponding to the frame's position relative to the beginning of the tape. The inclusion of a time code, usually perfomed just prior to editing, allows for precide editing of material on the tape. See, in partocular, SMPTE Time Code.
