    Uncial

In typography, a type of modified majuscule letterform. Uncial comes from the Latin word uncus (meaning "crooked") and was a capital letter that rounded the straight lines. Uncials were essentially biform characters making the transition from caps to lowercase as scribes tried to write faster and faster. The progression continued through the half-uncial letterform to the Caroline minuscule.
