    Z, z

The twenty-sixth letter of the English alphabet, which derived from the North Semitic letter zayin by way of the Greek zeta. Although the "Z" character was adopted by the Etruscans, there was no "Z" in Latin until after the Roman conquest of Greece in the first century B.C., when it was developed to transliterate Greek works.
